Welcome to the home of Leung's White Crane. Here you will find information
about our history, our goal and us. We are a School of Chinese Martial Arts;
we are also a premier school of Lion Dancing with over 30 years of
experience. The school is structure like an extended family, student are not
students in the western sense. They are considered to be brothers, or
sisters of varying degrees. The delineation is trough generations, young
brother, older brother, and Senior Brothers. We are committed in keeping the
ways of our founders, and the Masters that preceded them. The quality of
training in which we live by is second to none, perfection is an obsession.
Martial Arts: Chinese Martial Arts has been popularly known by the world as
Kung Fu. It’s a 20th century term that became synonymous with Chinese
Martial Arts, after the downfall of the last dynasty. Technically it’s not a
proper term; you will not find the word Kung Fu in any text pre 20th
century. The proper term would be just the name of the school, and the type
of form they specialize in. School names are usually the same name as the
head Master, and the style could be a geographical region, a symbolic
animal, etc.
Lion Dance: This ritual goes as far back as the Qin Dynasty 221BC. Much of
its custom remained the same for centuries. Until the late 1970’s when
schools in Asia started combining Buc Si tricks (Northern Lion) with the
Southern Lion. The sport evolved very fast, today competitions are held in
many countries around the world. We use the Liondance to open the San
Francisco Chinese New Year Parade every year. We perform a short puzzle in
the opening, and a complete puzzle during the grand finale.
Dragon: The Dragon is near and dear to the hearts of all-Chinese. It’s a
source of ethnic identity; it is a binding cultural myth that the Chinese
are descendant of Dragons. Earliest account of Dragon used in celebration
dates back to the Han Dynasty 180AD. The general rule of thumb is bigger,
longer, is better! Every year we perform the grand finale in San Francisco
Chinese New Years Parade. With over 300 participants in our school we bring
out the largest Dragon outside of Asia.
